How long does SEO take to work?
SEO usually takes two to three months to show the first ranking movement and four to six months to bring steady leads for low-competition keywords. Competitive city or national keywords take six to twelve months. The timeline depends on your site's age, its current problems, how much content and how many links it needs, and how strong the competition is.
Month by month
Month 1: foundation. Audit, keyword map, tracking, technical fixes, Google Business Profile. Nothing visible in rankings yet.
Month 2: on-page. Titles, content improvements, internal links, first new pages. Google recrawls and re-evaluates. Impressions start to rise in Search Console.
Month 3: first movement. Long, specific keywords reach the first or second page. A few organic enquiries arrive.
Months 4 to 6: traction. More pages rank. Links and citations build. Low-competition clusters produce regular leads.
Months 7 to 12: compounding. Harder keywords move into the top ten. Older articles gather links on their own. Cost per lead from SEO falls below paid channels.
What makes it faster
- An established domain with some history
- A site that is fast and technically clean
- Choosing low-competition, high-intent keywords first
- Publishing useful pages every month
- Quick approvals from your side
- A complete Google Business Profile for local searches
What makes it slower
- A brand-new domain
- A previous penalty or a profile full of spam links
- Very competitive industries such as finance, real estate or health
- A website that is rarely updated
- Changing target keywords every month
Why it cannot be rushed
Google needs to crawl changes, compare your pages with others and observe how searchers respond. New sites also have no track record. Shortcuts such as buying links or mass-producing pages can bring a brief lift followed by a drop that takes far longer to recover from.
What to watch while you wait
Rankings are a late signal. Earlier ones are:
- Pages indexed, rising to match your real page count
- Impressions in Search Console, climbing week on week
- Number of keywords in the top 100, then top 20
- Clicks on non-brand searches
- Calls and direction requests from your Business Profile
If none of these has moved after three months of real work, something is wrong with the plan.
If you need leads now
Run Google Ads or Meta Ads alongside SEO for the first six months, then reduce ad spend as organic leads grow.
Is SEO ever finished?
No. Competitors publish, Google updates and your services change. The effort needed to hold a position is lower than the effort to win it, but it is never zero.

Quick answers
How long does SEO take to show results?
Expect first movement in two to three months and steady leads in four to six months for low-competition keywords. Competitive terms can take six to twelve months.
Can SEO work in one month?
Fixes can improve indexing and click rates within weeks, but ranking gains that bring leads rarely appear in the first month.
Why is my new website not ranking yet?
New domains have no history or links. Google needs time to crawl, index and compare the site with established competitors. Keep publishing and building links.
