How to write SEO title tags
A title tag is the clickable headline of your page in search results. To optimise it for SEO, put the main keyword near the start, keep it under about 60 characters, make it unique on your site and add a reason to click such as a price, place or benefit.
Why the title tag matters
It is one of the strongest on-page signals for what a page is about, and it is the first thing a searcher reads. A better title can raise clicks without any change in ranking.
Six rules
- Lead with the keyword. "Website Designing Company in India" before your brand name.
- Stay within about 60 characters. Google cuts off longer titles on most screens. Width matters more than count, so capital letters and wide characters use more space.
- One page, one title. Duplicate titles tell Google your pages compete with each other.
- Match what the searcher wants. A price query deserves a price in the title.
- Add something specific. A number, city, year or guarantee you can keep.
- Put the brand last, except on the home page.
Formulas you can copy
- Home page: Brand | What you do in a few words
- Service page: Service in Location | Proof or price | Brand
- Product page: Product name, key feature | Price or offer | Brand
- Category page: Category for audience | Range or count | Brand
- Blog post: How to do X: number of steps or the outcome
- Location page: Service in City | From price | Brand
Before and after
- Before: "Home". After: "Sharma Dental Clinic | Dentist in Vaishali Nagar, Jaipur"
- Before: "Services - ABC Pvt Ltd". After: "Industrial Valve Manufacturer in Vadodara | ABC Valves"
- Before: "Blog post 12". After: "Root Canal Cost in Jaipur: 2026 Price Guide"
Mistakes to avoid
- Stuffing: "SEO, SEO Services, Best SEO, SEO Company"
- Writing all titles in capitals
- Using the same title on every city page with one word changed and nothing else different on the page
- Promising what the page does not deliver
- Leaving the default title from your website builder
When Google rewrites your title
Google sometimes shows a different title, often built from your H1. It does this more when titles are too long, stuffed, or do not match the page. Keeping the title and H1 closely aligned reduces rewrites.
Meta description and H1
The meta description does not affect ranking directly, but a clear one earns clicks. Write up to about 155 characters that answer the search. The H1 is the on-page headline: one per page, close in meaning to the title.
Checking your titles
In Google Search Console, sort pages by impressions and look for those with a low click rate at a good position. Their titles are the first to rewrite.
Titles and descriptions are written for every page in our website packages and in on-page SEO.
